Effect of Magnesium on the Content and Composition of Essential Oil of Basil Cultivars Grown in Hydroponics

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different magnesium concentrations on the content of essential oil and the yield of essential oil of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), purple basil (O. basilicum purpurascens) and bush basil (O. minimum) in hydroponics. The increase of magnesium concentration in nutrient solution resulted in the remarkable increase of essential oil content of sweet, purple and bush basils , but the increase-rate of essential oil content between the cultivars of basils was different. The growth of three cultivars of basil responded differently by the different concentration of magnesium concentration in nutrient solution. However, the yield of essential oil of three basils tended to increase significantly. Linalool content in basil oil was more with an increase of magnesium concentration in nutrient solution, but in contrast of linalool content in basil oil eugenol content in basil oil was less with more concentration of magnesium in nutrient solution.
